DIE LIEBE ZU DEN DREI ORANGEN

PRINZ | KONZERT UND THEATER ST. GALLEN

Laughter is the best medicine: So the court tries to coax a laugh out of the melancholy prince. This goes horribly wrong, because the evil sorceress, at whom the prince finally laughs, condemns him to the eponymous love of three oranges . Sergei Prokofiev's crazy opera offers everything you would expect from a fairy tale: kings and wizards, princesses and princes, laughter and tears, curses and redemption. At the same time, the work is a wonderful satire on the theater, because as a framework, representatives of tragedy, comedy and poetry as well as the idiots discuss which genre tells the best story.

DIE FLEDERMAUS

ALFRED | KONZERT UND THEATER ST. GALLEN

Instead of serving his sentence for insulting an official in prison, Gabriel von Eisenstein prefers to have a drunken time incognito at Prince Orlofsky's ball. But the next morning comes a major disillusionment: the exotic flirt at the ball turns out to be his wife and the new friend the prison director. Embarrassed, Eisenstein has to realize that he has become the victim of a revenge plot by his friend Dr. Falke, who blames Eisenstein for his walk of shame in a bat costume after a night of drinking.

With subtle wit and intoxicating waltzes, polkas and gallops, Johann Strauss' successful operetta entertainingly addresses the lusts, confusions and (role) constraints of bourgeois society and the urge to break these shackles.

Guta Rau's production provides a colorful mix of lively stage action, quirkiness, humor and wit for an enjoyable and waltz-filled evening of operetta.

MACBETH

MACDUFF | KONZERT UND THEATER ST. GALLEN

The witches' prophecy promises Macbeth a glorious future: he will become King of Scotland. This triggers an insatiable lust for power in Macbeth and his lady. Lady Macbeth urges her husband to take fate into his own hands, even if it means shedding blood. But the ruling couple is wracked with guilt, falls into madness and ultimately becomes victims of their own ambition. With Shakespeare's dark tragedy about the deadly struggle for power and even madness, Verdi chose a model that was daring for the operatic practice of the time due to its cruel content, lack of love story and tenor hero. But the result is a captivating opera that explores how guilt is dealt with and shows a merciless chain of violence, terror, paranoia and ultimately madness. Musically, monumental choral scenes alternate with arias and duets in which the psychological depths of the protagonists are expressed through expressively designed vocal lines in which linguistic and acting aspects take precedence over vocal brilliance. Krystian Lada, who most recently directed the world premiere of Lili Elbe, which won the "Opera! Award" , deals in his production of Macbeth with the question of how people make decisions and what the consequences of ambition and hunger for power are.

TOSCA

CAVARADOSSI | KONZERT UND THEATER ST. GALLEN

"I lived for art, I lived for love. – And yet the singer Floria Tosca finds herself in a maelstrom of betrayal, torture and murder from which there is no escape: Tosca tries to save her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, from the clutches of the brutal police chief Scarpia. The latter demands a night together as the price for Tosca's release. After that, she and Cavaradossi are to be allowed to leave Rome unmolested, covered up by the mock execution of her lover. Tosca agrees, but stabs Scarpia in the heat of the moment. But even in death, the scheming police chief has the reins of events firmly in his hand. Based on Victorien Sardou's drama, Giacomo Puccini wrote Tosca , one of the most famous and popular operas in the repertoire to date. Passionate music interspersed with verismo elements, captivating arias such as Vissi d'arte and E lucevan le stelle , a An emotional triangular constellation and a captivating political background make this work an opera thriller that has thrilled audiences since its premiere in 1900.

After a one-year break, the St. Gallen Concert and Theater will be performing Puccini's opera in the monastery courtyard again in summer 2025. The team around the Argentinian director Marcos Darbyshire, who already staged Piazzolla's tango opera María de Buenos Aires in the UM!BAU, is devoting itself to this gripping opera story about love, jealousy and murder and is bringing the Castel Sant'Angelo and the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle to life in front of the collegiate church.
